AKYAKA
Akyaka is primarily a fishing and farming community which in summer also becomes a small traditional Turkish resort.
Its delightful position is at the end of the Gulf of Gökova and is bordered by the 1000m high Escarpment to the north and the wetlands of the Gökova plain to the south. It is said that because of the springs, river and many eucalyptus trees in and around Akyaka it has a very therapeutic atmosphere. In fact many people from Muğla actually retire in Akyaka for health reasons. Experience the calm beauty of and walks through the pine forests as well as the sea views and restaurants along the Azmak River where you can observe a multitude of bird life and with luck the otters which inhabit the reed beds Akyaka village became famous for its traditional architecture particularly the houses designed by Nail Cakirhan who won a 'Aga Han' award in 1986. The houses are a combination of old Ottoman Empire and Greek style and maintain warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer. The original design has altered since but all new property retains a residue of the original architecture. As a consequence the village is very pretty especially with the abundance of varnished hardwood as a background to the sweetly smelling colourful flowers. The main beach is sandy, has a Blue Flag and the sea is shallow making it particularly safe for young children |
